Check out "The Plant". They have opportunities for internships/volunteering, tours of the facility, and events to try and get people involved in this amazing organization!

What is The Plant? A Farm for the Future.

From its beginnings as a 93,500 s.f. meatpacking facility, The Plant is being repurposed into a net-zero energy vertical farm and food business operation. A complex and highly interrelated system, one-third of The Plant will hold aquaponic growing systems and the other two-thirds will incubate sustainable food businesses by offering low rent, low energy costs, and a licensed shared kitchen. The Plant will create 125 jobs in Chicago’s economically distressed Back of the Yards neighborhood – but, remarkably, these jobs will require no fossil fuel use. Instead, The Plant will eventually divert over 10,000 tons of food waste from landfills each year to meet all of its heat and power needs.

This past Thursday we had Liz Williams come all the way from New Orleans to tell us about her journey in starting her own food museum (as well as two other museums)! Seeing how much she accomplished and how well she did just motivates us even more to create a museum that is just as amazing as hers!

Incredible work Liz!

Look at The Southern Food and Beverage Museum’s webpage

as well as OKRA, which is is their magazine

Howdy followers!
I know it has been a little while since anyone in the class has posted anything, so I thought I would keep the tumblr updated with some fun little nuances while our class takes a slight breather from the photo craziness that has occurred as of late!
In November of this year, Chicago will be holding a CHICAGO FOOD FILM FESTIVAL! How exciting is that? Right as our class has begun to dive into the wonderful aspects of Chicago as a food city, in rolls this amazing event! It is necessary that we all go, despite the class being over at that point.

(Part 2) On March 1, 2012 our Chicago: The Food City class once again ventured on two STUDENT ORCHESTRATED field trips! The second field trip occurred in Chinatown where were given a tour by Hailee, Margo, and Qianyu. We were taken to various cultural stops as well as food ones. Our tasting came in the form of crazy tasty baked goods, most of which I had never had before and could not possibly name for you with the exception of the almond cookie. Which I have, of course, had before. We also went to a health food store and a grocery store which were filled with products that I had never seen before. It was wonderful to see a culture up close and personal. This is the closest one can come to China without actually going there. I loved it

(Part 1) On March 1, 2012 our Chicago: The Food City class once again ventured on two STUDENT ORCHESTRATED field trips! Like I said in an earlier post, we were divided into groups of three and given various food-centered areas of the city. This time we saw Pilsen, which was presented by Ana, Sylwia, and MG. We were able to have a tasting at Nuevo Leon in Pilsen, which was delicious. We also traveled to various other food stores such as a bakery, a candy store, and a local grocery store! At the bakery we were lucky enough to get a history from one of the managers! She was so sweet, helpful, and extremely informative. We also stopped at the National Museum of Mexican Art to see if we could spot any influences of food in the art.
